A plan to build and develop a set of three buildings within the Atlantic Square project has been approved by Glasgow City council recently. The project cost is estimated at £100m. The plans are viewed as being beneficial to the International Financial Services District which is located on the banks of the Clyde.

The city council has an objective of raising employment levels with about 20,000 new jobs in businesses located along the IFSD area within 2011. About 2 million square feet of prime Grade A office space is to be made available here towards this end.

The Atlantic City project will add some new structures to the IFSD buildings with buildings that will accommodate retail shopping, office space and entertainment area. The project is expected to generate about 2500 jobs. A total of three buildings will be developed here. The first two will have shared office area of 161,000 sq ft and 66,000 sq ft with a 150 bed hotel taking up majority of the six story third building. In addition to offices, there will also be 20,000 sq ft of leisure area, conference areas, and a health club. Access will be provided to all three buildings from each other by means of a covered courtyard. The project site is the space between Broomielaw and city centre buildings in the middle of York Street and James Watt Street.

Plans are in motion to increase the visibility of this business location and to improve the pedestrian activity here. When completed, this complex is expected to bring in the kind of focus to Glasgow as the Atlantic Quay did.
