JANET education and research network will aid in establishing high-speed internet in public libraries across the UK. Recently an announcement was made of an agreement that the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) has signed with JISC and JANET (UK).

The current scenario is that people can avail of a standard internet connection for research in public libraries. This will soon change once the scheme comes into force. The traditional connections used in public libraries can then be optionally converted to the superior ‘Janet’ network which is favoured by most schools and universities for its speeds that far exceed capabilities of home fibre optic broadband connection (click here for a

broadband check).

The ‘Janet’ network is funded by the government and it can bring up to 1GB speeds. Even the bigger central libraries do not have internet at this speed at present. MLA Chief Executive Roy Clare expressed his happiness at this measure being taken by public libraries in advancing research facilities.

Clare said that this is a landmark decision that will aid users of the library immensely as did the introduction of internet about a decade ago. He hopes that all libraries will take full advantage of the optional upgrade to better their internet services.

Speaking about the announcement, Jane Finnis from Culture24 said that this scheme would enhance the value of the public library for the users by offering a high-quality internet service to carry out necessary and critical research.

Newspapers are abuzz with reports that T-Mobile could soon be sold or merged with another company, with 3 and Orange said to be the most likely candidates.

The Financial Times was the first to publish the news, suggesting that Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile UK is facing increasing pressure from its shareholders to make a quick decision regarding the UK unit, which is faced with low profitability.

The UK telecom market has some heavyweight players, and T-Mobile being one of the smallest mobile broadband internet providers has to constantly fight against its much bigger rivals. Due to low profits and poor performances of the UK unit, Deutsche Telekom itself had to announce a profit warning last month and the shareholders are clearly not pleased with the situation.

The FT report, which quotes unnamed sources, also says the Deutsche Telekom has been desperately trying to figure out a solution for T-Mobile UK for the last six months, and quitting the UK market is one of the most likely decisions.

René Obermann, chief executive of Deutsche Telekom had said last month that he would soon be putting a new management in charge of the UK business, but it seems now that the company is all set to go for a sale or a merger. The company has not come out with any comments so far to clarify the situation, which is understandable if a major deal is being negotiated.

Not so much the email itself, which was interesting, but more where it was sent from. A little note from my colleague at the end of the email informed me (in an ever so slightly gloating way) that he had sent it, using his new mobile broadband, from a restaurant

Now that intrigues me. He has always been up on the new business techniques, from business motivation to business broadband, so this wasn’t a surprise. But he seems to think that mobile Internet for laptops is the future, and it seems hard to argue with him.

The ability to have broadband attached to a laptop anywhere sounds very useful. From getting work done on a train, to having it ready and waiting at a client meeting, the uses are multitude.

So looking around for deals at the moment on Broadbandgenie.co.uk it seems there are rather a lot, not sure how I missed it before! It is surprisingly cheap, and some even have a free laptop attached to them. I am torn between a couple of options at the moment but hope to decide which mobile broadband Internet provider to go with by the end of the week.

GBIC & SFP transceivers

Cisco offers a GBIC & SFP products that give service providers and other companies the ability to easily establish Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber Channel within their networks. The GBIC, or Gigabit Interface Converter, is a standard for transceivers that plugs into a Gigabit Ethernet and connects to a fiber optic network. The SFP stands for small formfactor pluggable transceiver.

Not only affordable, the solution is easy and convenient. It can be deployed in college campuses, big city networks, and at company data centers. The product has two parts, including a component with eight pluggable transceivers, or the Cisco GBICs and Cisco CWDM SFPs) and a component with Cisco CWDM passive multiplexer/demultiplexer. Also, optical add/drop multiplexers, or OADMs, may be used. You can rack-mount the equipment on a chassis.

The benefits of Cisco’s GBIC & SFP offering include its scalability, using just one strand to move up to eight channels. And, the equipment works with a standard GBIC & SFP port. The Cisco equipment does not have to be powered and it does not have to be configured. It’s a versatile tool that permits various network configurations. Among them is a point-to-point configuration or a hub and spoke. The product will allow providers and businesses who use it to increase the bandwidth of a Gigabit Ethernet without using new fiber.

There are many different models of routers which utilize GBIC and SFP technology. Some examples include the short wavelength modules, long wavelength modules, and extended wavelength modules. The 1000BASE-SX is a shortwave length module that can operate up to 1800 feet via a standard multimode fiber-optic link. An example of a long wavelength GBIC and SFP module is the 1000BASE-LX/LH. This one operates fully with IEEE 802.3z. They have a much higher optical quality however, allowing them to reach over 6 miles over one fiber. A standard model can only reach over 3 miles.

An example of an extended length GBIC and SFP module is the 1000BASE-ZX. This uses a simple single-mode fiber-optic link which can cover over 40 miles. It can reach lengths of over 60 miles using the more complicated fibers such as the premium single-mode fiber-optic link, and the dispersion-shifted single-mode fiber. It is intended to be used as a Physical Medium Dependent for a gigabit Ethernet interface which can be found on various products. When you are reaching shorter lengths with a single fiber, you should use an in-line optical attenuator to make sure that you don’t overload the server.

The 7900 Prism has not proved the best reviewed mobile handset Nokia have every produced, even so it remains worth considering if you find one with a cheap monthly rental fee. With this mobile handset Nokia have produced something which is reasonably well featured for the price. Like other similarly priced models from Nokia the design is quite cutting edge and would appeal to a broad range of users.

The 7900 Prism has support for 2G GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and 3G UMTS 850 / 2100. A 2 MP, 1600×1200 pixels, video(QCIF), flash camera is integrated into the 7900 Prism camera. A WAP 2.0/xHTML browser allows this handset to be used for mobile Internet access. The Nokia 7900 Prism is has bluetooth, meaning it is compatible with a range of devices. The ring-tones on the 7900 Prism are Polyphonic (64 channels), MP3 along with a vibrating alert. In terms of the the display the mobile handset is supplied with a 2 inch screen, which is a bit disappointing for the price. The display type on this phone is a OLED, 16M colors. With regards its size the Nokia 7900 Prism is very small. This phone weighs just 101 g. Colour wise the Nokia 7900 Prism is only available in Black. The battery cell that is shipped with the 7900 Prism is a Li-Ion 850 mAh (BL-6P). Moving on to the all important battery cell usage the Nokia 7900 Prism has 240 hrs reserve time and 3:00 talk time. This mobile handset has a number of extras such as, Configurable keypad backlighting color, MP3/AAC/eAAC+/WMA player, Living wallpaper, Calendar, Built-in handsfree, Voice memo, Java MIDP 2.0 and Calculator.

Regardless of being a fairly new model, the Nokia 7900 Prism has some really competition from rival manufacturers products. Because of this it is quite easy to pick up a real bargain on this phone. Due to the number of online stores that have opened it has never been more convenient or cheaper to purchase a mobile. Buying online can deliver some significant cost savings, incredibly it is possible to get a one year free line rental offer on the Nokia 7900 Prism , which may not cost very much at all, if anything.
